When it comes to plugins & software, there is a lot to choose from and I think one of the more challenging aspects of it is knowing whether it works with Garageband, which is probably one of the downsides of using it as a DAW. With that in mind, in my view, the best free (and premium) plugins for Garageband are: Over the last few years, I’ve tried out and tested some of the more popular plugins and plugin bundles so I have a good knowledge of what I like, and that’s what this list will feature: the plugins and VSTs that I like and not necessarily the ones that a producer is supposed to like.

I think it's still on sale at $79 and the expansion packs are $39 (not on Toontrack's own site, but everywhere else - Sweetwater, MF, AudioMidi, etc.) Others, like Superior Drummer or the Kontakt player, have more options built in - for example, you can insert effects right in the instrument's mixer, but I find that, anyway, once the tracks are routed to their individual channel in Logic, I can do all the processing I want, plus, I can do it with my favorite plug-ins. Furthermore, it's multichannel so this allows you to adjust the actual kit mix. It's light on the cpu, very easy to use and it has a pattern browser allowing you to audition midi loops, which is much more convenient and quicker than having to drag them into a track just to audition them.Īs a songwriter, it's probably one of my absolute favorite tools - it allows me to quickly build a drum track and move on, and afterwards, of course I can edit it. I have Steven Slate EX (which comes with the Kontakt player) and EZ Drummer, and I find myself using EZ Drummer 99% of the time.
